How to maintain your garage door

Posted by

Buying a garage door can be expensive but did you know that garage door can last you many years with the proper care and attention.

Your garage door is an important part of your house; both for appearance and security but many people don’t make the effort to maintain it.

A survey has revealed that 47% of home owners with garages have never had their garage door serviced and 34% admit to never testing their door’s safety features.

Having a garage door that isn’t performing correctly can add a huge risk factor to your home when it comes to burglary and can also be a danger to people who are in and out of the garage.

Here are some quick and easy ways to make sure your garage door is in a safe and working order:

Visual Inspection

From the inside of the garage door, while the door is closed, check over the arms, springs, hinges and rollers for any visible damage. Does anything look excessively worn or coming loose?

Oil the parts

If you want to extend the life of your garage door, this is the easiest step. Applying a small amount of silicone spray lubricant to all of the moving parts (hinges, rollers, pivot points and locks) will keep the door from seizing up and making those horrible squeaking noises.

Clean the track

The track needs to be kept free of any grease or residue. To clean the track, you should wipe it over with a damp cloth and then spray it with WD-40 or something similar as this works to cut through grease.

Exterior check

The outside of the door needs cleaning regularly with a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse it with a hose pipe or a bucket of water. If your door is made of wood, examine the paintwork or stain to make sure there are no areas that need re-painting or staining.

Weather seals

Having weather seals fitted to your door can make your garage eco-friendlier, reducing your energy bills. Make sure the seals are in good condition, and if you don’t currently have any, consider getting some fitted.
