Advantages of side hinged garage doors:

  • available as narrow as 5ft wide for small garages
  • security upgrades available
  • most come pre-fitted on a steel fully finished goalpost frame for easy and quick onsite fitting
  • similar security to an up and over garage door
  • side hinged garage doors are available in numerous materials, such as soft wood and hard wood, GRP, ABS and steel fully finished in numerous colours
  • available as insulated or non insulated option

Disadvantages of side hinged garage doors:

  • they can only be made to a maximum width of 9 foot wide
  • side hinged garage doors are more awkward to make automatic
  • they are also more costly to make automatic
  • side hung doors are not as secure as sectional or roller garage doors

Questions you should ask yourself that will help you to choose the garage door that suits all your needs.

  1. The first question you should ask yourself is do you need your garage to be draft proof and insulated? If your garage is an integral part of the house with a bedroom above then you should consider having an insulated garage door with a high U value. It will be worth it in the long run as you will save money on the heating bills. If your garage is detached then insulation is not as important, however you should take into consideration security of the garage, as we will explain in paragraphs 2 and 7.
  2. Also important thing to consider is what is your garage used for? Do you park your car in it or use it as a home gym. Do you have your hobby room/workshop in your garage or child’s playroom? You should consider that most garage doors have tracks on the ceiling. The only three types of doors that have no ceiling tracks are side hinged, roller doors and side sliding sectional doors.
