Advantages and Disadvantages of Installing a Wooden Garage Door.

We would like to talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of installing a wooden garage door made from either a European Pine or Western Red Cedar, solid Oak or Idigbo wood.

If you have decided to have a wooden garage door installed on your garage perhaps you should have a look at a different timber options and their advantages and disadvantages.

All main wooden garage door manufactures choose to use the following three timber types for their garage doors: either European Pine, Cedar, Idigbo or Oak. Each type of wood has it’s own advantages and disadvantages. We are going to discuss them with you in detail.

Western Red Cedar garage doors

Cedar wood garage doors are the most popular an they are our best seller. Main manufactures of cedar wood garage doors are Cedardoor, Woodrite, Hormann and Garador.

Cedar wood garage doors are available in a wide range of standard and made to measure sizes, designs and types. Cedar wood is the most popular material due to its stability, rot resistance, good looks and price.

The advantages of cedar wood garage doors are:

  •  cedar is very durable and stable timber
  • cedar is rot resistant, so will last a lot longer than pine
  • it is a good value for money
  • it looks good and can be fully finished in a wide variety of colours to keep maintenance to an absolute minimum
  • matching timber frames are also available.
  • doors can be side hinged, up and over or sectional type
  • sectional cedar doors are draft proof
  • an up and over retractable type and a sectional type can be easily automated

The disadvantages of the cedar garage doors are:

  •  made to measure cedar door manufacturers lead times are rather long – it can take between 6 to 9 weeks from the time of order to delivery of the door
  • cedar side hinged and up and over doors are not draft proof and not insulated
  • eventually even fully finished cedar doors they will have to be repainted and maintained
  • cedar doors are generally more expensive than steel garage doors

 European Pine garage doors

Main manufacturer of pine garage doors is Jeldwen.

The advantages of the of the garage door made out of European pine are:

  • the cheapest amongst the wooden garage doors
  • quick delivery
  • natural knots visible that creates an authentic look

The disadvantages of the of the garage door made out of European pine are:

  • European Pine is a natural product and contains random knots.
  • Pine doors are only available as side-hinged option
  • they are only available in two designs, and in two standard sizes
  • pine doors require a lot of maintenance. Doors are delivered unpainted and have to be painted on site. Pine side-hinged doors are guaranteed for one year against manufacturing defects. Please note. That in order to keep manufacturers’ warranty valid doors must be painted on ALL edges before the installation
  • only available as a side hinged type and therefore can not be automated

Jeldwen side hinged garage door is manufactured with 14mm finish tongued and grooved V-jointed European Pine. The centre stiles where the two door leafs meet are rebated. For improved stability there is a proportion of finger-jointed components.

Idigbo wood garage doors

Idigbo is a beautiful, certified hardwood that looks very similar to oak yet is lower in price and more stable in its natural form. It can be fully finished in Natural Oak, Old Oak or Brackley Oak wood finish. Main manufacturer of Idigbo wood garage doors is Woodrite.

The advantages of the of the garage door made out of Idigbo wood are:

  • it is a certified tropical hardwood that looks as beautiful as oak
  • Idigbo is lighter and more stable than oak
  • it is also cheaper than oak
  • it comes in many standard sizes
  • also available made to measure
  • Idigbo up and over retractable type can be easily automated

The disadvantages of the of the garage door made out of Idigbo wood are:

  • Idigbo doors are individually made therefore lead times are about 6 to 9 weeks
  • cost more that an equivalent cedar wood door

European Oak garage doors

Made from oak faced exterior grade ply and oak mouldings.European Oak garage doors are manufactured by Woodrite in traditional and contemporary styles.

 The advantages of the of the garage door made out of Oak are:

  • these doors combine the beauty of oak and the simplicity and reliability of an up and over door
  • it comes in many standard sizes
  • also available made to measure
  • oak up and over retractable type can be easily automated

The disadvantages of the of the garage door made out of Oak are:

  • Oak timber is not as stable of a material as Cedar or Idigbo, especially in the wetter climates
  • Oak doors are individually made therefore lead times are about 7 to 9 weeks
  • Oak doors are more expensive than any wooden doors available on the market
