Looking after your Garage Doors

Posted by

When it comes to DIY, it can be all too easy to focus on, say, the kitchen or bathroom, rather than the garage.

However, while your garage may generally only be used fleetingly, it’s nonetheless important to keep it secure, safe and its doors well maintained and in good working order.

That’s especially the case when you consider how much the doors, brickwork, guttering, roofing, windows and brickwork of your garage are exposed to the worst of the British winter in terms of cold temperatures and wind.

Now that spring seems finally to have arrived, it’s a good time to check the doors of your garage are as well maintained as they could and should be.

Simple tips for keeping garage doors in tip-top condition

While doors on most garages are both flexible and strong, they can be vulnerable to rust and damage if maintenance checks are not carried out several times a year. Here are some tips to help:

  • Rollers, hinges, tracks and latches on your garage doors can all do with a regular spray of a lubricant such as WD-40. You’ll also need to keep bearings and pulleys well lubricated so that the spring openers are able to operate correctly, and to prevent and treat rust.
  • Another useful liquid is kerosene, which can help when hinges or rollers become stuck. You can also work it into any crack, and if there is any rust the kerosene will deal with it.
  • After using kerosene, add some lubricant to the hinges to get them moving to their maximum potential once more.
  • The hinges and door opener are the most likely parts of your doors to rust and become harder to move, but with good lubrication you won’t have any problems.

Wooden Doors Maintenance

Are your doors made of wood rather than steel? Make sure you have painted them or covered with a good sealant to prevent weather damage.

Touch up the sealant or paintwork regularly so that your doors always look fresh.

Safety Tips

  • Read all the labels on the liquids and lubricants you use, and guidelines for the doors themselves.
  • Only use the right tools and products for your door. If not, you could damage your door so that it needs replacing or you may end up having to call out a professional to fix it.
  • Think about your family’s safety and don’t leave things like WD-40 or kerosene lying around your garage within children’s reach.
