Tips to maintain your garage and garage doors

Posted by

Regular maintenance of your garage and the garage doors will ensure that they will stay safe and secure for many years, with minimum repairs. When you purchase your garage doors, you have made a significant investment in your home and expect the product to last for many years without trouble. Although you will have chosen a reputable company to supply a good quality product, along with professional garage door fitting, you will have to carry out regular maintenance to make sure no faults occur and prolong the life of the doors. Your garage should also be maintained, especially if you have young children who may go into the garage, or use it for an alternative purpose.

Each month spend a few minutes checking your garage door to make sure it operates smoothly without any juddering or resistance. Electric garage doors should be checked to make sure the sensors are in good working order, stopping the garage door from closing if an object is in the way. Check that all parts are free of rust, especially the cables and springs. If any rust is spotted, replace the part immediately.

On a regular basis check the bolts of the garage door, as they can work loose over a period of time. Ensure the garage door is in the closed position before checking the bolts are tight. Checking the bolts and all moving parts for rust will prevent expensive repair bills and any serious faults, and lubricate all moving parts of your garage door with oil to ensure smooth movement. You may have a garage door which is self lubricating, but if you aren’t sure check with the supplier. When you purchase your garage door, check whether you have to have a regular service to fulfil the terms of the warranty. A regular service could prolong the life of your garage door while preventing faults and possibly any accidents.

When you initially select a garage door, you may avoid a timber door as you believe that the maintenance will be time consuming. This is not the case as timber garage doors only require a coat of paint or wood sealant to protect it from the elements. The garage door will require the same amount of maintenance as any other door in addition to the painting, to keep it working without faults.

The garage itself should be kept clean and tidy, to prevent accidents and maintain order. Any spills on the floor of the garage should be cleaned immediately, while any hazardous materials should be safely stored, possibly locked away. Missing tiles on the roof of the garage should be replaced and gutters checked regularly to avoid problems with damp, especially if you use the garage as a play room or for another purpose. Taking the time to keep garage doors free of dust and dirt, while maintaining the garage and doors will prolong the life of your garage doors; keep your family safe and secure, while possibly increasing the value of your home.
